The power of habit -We all have the capacity change

We all know change is hard. Making and sustaining change requires discipline, motivation and consistently applying new behaviours to embed habits into your lifestyle.

I have made many changes to my lifestyle over the past 15 years. I moved country, changed career, changed my beliefs, changed my mindset, changed my body, changed my whole lifestyle. Having made many mistakes along the way, I have learned many lessons. That is what I wish to share with you all  – tools and strategies that have proved pivotal for me in making and sustaining change in my own life.

The Challenge of Change

We all have the capacity to change.

Past experiences do not define us, they are not who we are, but they can hold us back from moving forward if we attach to them, that is why creating and becoming clear on your new identity is an instrumental part of the process in moving forward and making lasting change.

You do not have to tie yourself up in an old identity, who you were 5-10-15 years ago. These outdated beliefs are what can hold us back from bringing about the changes we truly desire.

When I look back over my lifestyle I had so many bad habits, behaviours that were preventing me from becoming the person I truly desired. I spiralled in loops of self-sabotaging behaviour, constantly repeating patterns. I was trying so hard to move forward to make changes but my old identity of low self worth, low confidence, not being good enough kept showing up, preventing me from moving forward.

I want to prevent you from making the mistakes I made (repeatedly). I kept making choices that were leading me in the wrong direction, repeating old patterns of behaviour, linked to my old identity. Constantly frustrated with my inability to make lasting change.

My actions were keeping me tied to that old identity rather than moving towards the new identity ‘ the better version of me’ I so longed for.

Who do you want to become, e.g.  I am the type of person that….exercises daily, fuels my body effectively, has a self care daily ritual.

Become clear on your new upgraded identity!

My yoga journey enabled me to find clarity, enhancing my self awareness. It is important to become clear on your identity as you begin to introduce new behaviours, this step is key in bringing about lasting change.

‘In stillness we find clarity’  I became clear on my identity – ‘I am the type of person that  _________’.

My self growth journey led to the establishment of my first business JD Fitness ‘Better Mind Better Body’. I had a burning desire to share all my knowledge gained to help as many people as possible to overcome challenges, to overcome their own self-imposed limiting beliefs to bring about the changes they so desired. I had learned so much and made so many changes myself internally & externally, I wanted to help everyone feel their best and live their best life.

Through extensive reading, research, courses, self-development, and an attitude of determination. I gained the skillset, the knowledge and developed the toolkit – I learned how to make micro changes, apply them consistently and build, to continually evolve and grow. At first it was difficult, I didn’t really notice the changes, but then it began to snowball. All the small changes coming together, as every part of my lifestyle came into sync, gaining momentum, my new identity was emerging, drawing closer to my more authentic self.

“Over the long run, however, the real reason you fail to stick with habits is that your self-image gets in the way. This is why you can’t get too attached to one version of your identity. Progress requires unlearning. Becoming the best version of yourself requires you to continuously edit your beliefs, and to upgrade and expand your identity.James Clear
